Testimonial by Amanda Cowsill mum to Cordelia

I found out about Stick ‘n’ Step from Granada report but then I didn’t do anything for about 12 months.

Then I met someone who came to Stick ‘n’ Step, which spurred me on to come and see for myself.  At this point Cordelia (Coco) was 4.

Right: Amanda and Cordelia

Carole and AIden

Prior to Stick ‘n’ Step Coco would be described as having limited mobility – she could sit up and bum shuffle (she was greatly restricted with the use of her left side).  She didn’t want to weight-bare and wasn’t physically strong enough to achieve much.  She wasn’t even toilet trained.  Although Coco was aware of her environment and was interested in things around her, she had no confidence to interact with it.

Since attending Stick ‘n’ Step Coco has gained in confidence, strength and self-esteem.  She wants to learn and is happy to learn.  Physically Coco can now pull herself from sitting to standing and is toilet trained.  She is walking with minimum support and can clasp her hands together in mid-line. Coco’s communication is more spontaneous and she listens and interacts with children and adults.

Stick ‘n Step has opened a door to the world for Cordelia, she believes she can do whatever all the other children can do and she thanks Stick ‘n’ Step.

From a parent’s point of view the support and comfort I get from just having a cup of tea with mums and dads like me is priceless.  It’s an extended family with really good friends who know what a challenge getting up in the morning can be.
